Engineer’s Day 2019: The Engineer’s Day is celebrated in India on September 15 to remembering on the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya. He was the pioneering engineer in India. Not only in India, also today SriLanka and Tanzania celebrated as Engineer’s Day on his birthday anniversary.

Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya also known as Sir MV. Sir MV was born in a modest family in Muddenahalli village in the erstwhile Mysore State. The great Indian engineer, scholar, statesman, and the 19th Diwan of Mysore, who served from 1912 to 1918. He also called the “Father of Modern Mysore”.

His contribution to India:
After topping the Poona College of Engineering he directly recruited by the Government of Bombay and appointed as Assistant Engineer in Public Works Department.
Visvesvaraya invented the block system, automated doors that close the water overflows and designed and patented the floodgates. These floodgates were installed at the Khadakwasla reservoir in Pune for the first time in 1903.
Then in the early 20th century, Visvesvaraya became the chief engineer of the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam project in Mysore, which was then the biggest in Asia.
In 1909, the master-builder was appointed as the special consultant engineer to make Hyderabad flood-proof in the face of approaching floods.
In 1917 in Bengaluru, Visvesvaraya established Government Engineering College, which later renamed University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering.
His Award: Visvesvaraya awarded ‘Bharat Ratna’ for his exceptional contribution to the building of India in 1955. Besides, he also awarded the British knighthood by King George V, which prefixed ‘sir’ to his name.
